We already broke the news last week about the BMW R1200GS model recall, for issues with the front fork tubes, but today the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) made it official, listing the recall on its public database.
The move sees BMW Motorrad USA recalling over 14,000 units in the US market, which is close to one tenth of the total models sold worldwide. This recall affects certain 2014-2017 BMW R1200GS and BMW R1200GS Adventure motorcycles.
As we mentioned in our previous reporting, at the center of the recall – which started life as a mere technical bulletin – is the ability for the fixed fork tube to separate from the pressed in seal plug that secures the tube to the upper triple clamp.
Aware of the issue since it first appeared in March 2016, BMW will now notify affected owners, and BMW dealers will add an additional fixed fork tube bushing. In the case of a fork being already sufficiently damaged, it will be replaced with a modified new part. These repairs will be made free of charge.
As there is an extremely limited supply of replacement parts, this recall is expected to begin September 1, 2017. Concerned BMW owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. As always, the NHTSA is also available at 1-888-327-4236 and safercar.gov.
