History was made in the FIM World Supersport 300 class this weekend in Portugal, as Ana Carrasco became the first woman ever to win a World Championship (solo) race.
Her victory didn’t come easy though, as three riders had a hand on the winner’s trophy, as they came down the front straight away for the final time.
Expertly gauging the draft to the finish line, Ana Carrasco put herself in front of Alfonoso Coppola (+0.053) and Marc Garcia (+0.062), narrowly beating the two Yamaha YZF-R3 riders with her Kawasaki Ninja 300.
Carrasco’s date with destiny was well set up with her work over the race weekend, as the 20-year-old Spaniard put together a start from the third grid position at Portimão, her first front-row start of the season.
At the end of the 11-lap race, Carrasco became the fifth rider to climb the victor’s step in the Supersport 300 series this year, the victory bringing her from eleventh to the seventh position in the overall championship standings.
Of course, the headline news is Carrasco’s mark as the first female to win a World Championship race – at one of the most competitive tracks of the season, no less.
“I am very happy about this result,” said Carrasco. “I want to share it with all my team. We have worked very hard and we have been making progress in each race…I am very happy and I would like to thank all of them, as well as my sponsors, since without them this would not be possible.”
