Lausitzring WorldSBK Debrief – Sunday

Ducati’s Chaz Davies romped to back to back races in Germany, with a superb performance in Race 2 at the Lausitzring.

The Welsh wizard became the King of the ‘Ring, with his third dry weather victory in a row at the circuit. It wasn’t an easy day for the riders however, with spits of rain and the threat of showers hanging in the air.

“I knew the second race was going to be tighter,” said Davies. “It was hard to come from the third row, I made some good passes out there, and had a lot of fun.”

“It was a case of setting my own rhythm, we had a lot of fast sections, but they were quicker than me in other sections, and for that reason it was harder to get away, but I made some good passes and got the job done.”

The cooler conditions of yesterday left Kawasaki’s tire choice being questioned, and today Jonathan Rea and Tom Sykes both used the safer choice of the harder compound.

Rea was able to make swift progress on the opening lap from the third row of the grid, and took an early lead, but he was hunted down by Davies.

“Chaz was really solid in race two and his pace was good,” admitted Rea. “When I had really good grip in the beginning, I felt strong on the bike, but as soon as I started to lose entry-traction the bike became very physical to ride.”

“I was manhandling the bike and this is such a bumpy track. Yesterday’s race started to take its toll a little bit also. I had no big moments, but I just tried to rein it in a little bit and I saw that my gap behind to Marco was just moving forward, tenth by tenth, so it was about consolidation at the end.

“When I lost the edge grip, it was just not possible to stay in front, but I did try. I am happy with the results from this weekend as the bike has never really worked that well here and we were on the back foot on Friday.”

“So to make the setup changes we did, and make some big steps, I am really happy with the team, and we come away with 40 points from Lausitzring, which I am satisfied with.”

The victory is Davies’ sixth of the season, and while he has fallen out of title contention, he will hope to continue his winning ways next time out at Portimao.
